Orlando City’s Cyle Larin Breaks Rookie Goal Scoring Record

Something about the state of New York agrees with rookie, Cyle Larin.

Friday night at Red Bull Arena, Larin made history with the most goals scored in a rookie season. The 20-year-old Canadian set a new record 14 goals, officially beating former record holder, Damani Ralph, and has three more games this season to add to his total.

Larin was the number 1 pick in the 2015 January MLS SuperDraft and is the 8th rookie to score a hat trick in MLS regular season play. He has made it abundantly clear why he was worth the first pick.

An expansion team was likely the best place for Larin to end up, there are plenty of veteran players like Aurélien Collin and Kaká, but without any MLS history to speak of, this year’s team has been completely this roster’s own. Larin was given a chance to play early in the season when he came on as a starter against Vancouver in March. His first goal came a few weeks later against the Portland Timbers.

As the Lions try desperately to keep their playoff hopes alive, Friday night’s win was the third in a row, if Larin can keep his streak going then Orlando might have a fighting chance at the playoffs.
