As Orlando City SC prepares to face off against Toronto FC tonight in Canada, Cyle Larin not only returns to his home country but he also stands on the precipice of breaking a record for most goals scored by a rookie in a single MLS season. Last weekend Larin tied the current record holder, Damani Ralph, with 11 goals after scoring two against Columbus Crew at home bringing his total to 5 goals scored in the last two games.
The Lions picked Larin first in the MLS SuperDraft last year, making him the first-ever Canadian selected first in the league’s history. His first appearance for Orlando was as a substitute in March with is first goal coming against Portland in April.
Currently, the 20-year-old has scored 11 goals in 16 appearances for Orlando. Becoming a major fixture in the Lions lineup due to various injuries throughout the season, Larin has taken advantage of his opportunities and has become a major fixture up-top for the new expansion team.
After being named to the senior team in 2014, Larin has made 10 appearances and scored 3 goals for Canada despite not appearing once for the Canadian youth team.
The record was set by Ralph 12 years ago, and if the record is not broken by Larin tonight there’s plenty of the season left for the Canadian to earn his 12th goal. When Ralph set the current record he was selected to be MLS Rookie of the Year, a goal that is likely being actively pursued by Larin as he looks at the goal record up close.
