Strikers Ink Brazilian Veteran, Gabriel Rodrigues dos Santos

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers today announced the signing of Brazilian defender / midfielder Gabriel Rodrigues dos Santos, pending International Transfer Clearance. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Brazilian, 34, goes by his first name, Gabriel. An attack-minded right wing back for much of his career, Gabriel can also play across the midfield.

“I’m pleased that Gabriel has signed with the team because he is one of those players that can really make a difference here,” said Strikers Head Coach Günter Kronsteiner. “He is a smart player, technically very gifted, and I believe that we will benefit from his quality.”

The São Paulo-native has spent the majority of his career in his home country. Gabriel started his professional career with São Paulo, before stints at other notable Brazilian clubs, including Fluminense, Cruzeiro, Grêmio, and Internacional.

Gabriel brings European experience to Fort Lauderdale, having played in the top flights of Spain and Greece with Málaga CF and Panathinaikos, respectively.

During his stint at Panathinaikos, Gabriel played in the biggest club competition in world soccer, the UEFA Champions League. He was part of the Panathinaikos squad that claimed the 2009-10 Super League title and the Greek Super Cup in 2010.

In 2005, Gabriel earned his only cap for the Brazil national team in a friendly match against Guatemala.
Gabriel played 45 minutes for the Strikers as an attacking midfielder in the Challenge Cup match against Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors on July 1 at Lockhart Stadium.
