Although it might not be Chicharito, Orlando City has shown interest in another International star.
According to Yahoo Brasil, a source close to the organization has confirmed the interest in Paulo Henrique Ganso.
“We made a very big offer for him,” said the source.
The 25-year old attacking midfield is currently under contract with São Paulo, who paid big money for him back in 2012, but has yet to produce what is expected of him on the pitch.
Ganso signed with São Paulo in 2012 after four seasons with Santos for roughly $7M. Since then, the Brazilian national has played in 68 matches and only found the back of the net six times. He has also been called to the Brazilian National Team and has made eight aperances since 2010.
Kaká is considered one of the driving forces in bringing Ganso to Orlando City, as they played together during Kaká’s loan spell with São Paulo last year.
Money-wise, the move would work. With São Paulo in need to offload players, the asking price for Ganso would be approximately $15 million Brazilian real, or about $4.8 million, which is not out of Orlando City’s price range.
However, São Paulo’s Vice President of Soccer Operations went on record after news broke about the Orlando City move to affirm that Ganso would not be released by São Paulo.
“Flavio Augusto showed interest in acquiring Ganso,” says Ataíde Gil Guerreiro, São Paulo’s Vice President of Soccer Operations. ” I told him that wouldn’t be possible. We are happy with Ganso’s progression and he is an important piece of our team. He will continue with us.”
Nothing is set in stone just yet, and it wouldn’t be surprising if São Paulo, who is in financial trouble, changes its tone regarding Ganso if Orlando City did indeed made a “very big offer” for the 25-year-old.
Ganso has a contract with São Paulo until 2017.
