Irish National Team to Host USMNT in November

451574298The United States Men’s National Team will square off against Ireland on November 18 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Football Associaition of Ireland and U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed.

Numerous Irish media outlets reported the match a month ago, however it was only made official yesterday.

The last time the USMNT and Ireland played was in 2002, when the Irish beat the American 2-1, also in Dublin.

The match served as the final tune-up prior to the 2002 FIFA World Cup roster announcement.

Ireland will be at most likely full strength as they have been drawn into Group D of qualifying for the 2014 European Championship, and will face Scotland in qualifying action four days prior to hosting the United States.

As for the U.S., although they can call their best players, since the friendly will be played on a FIFA international date, the match will fall in the middle of the MLS Cup playoffs, and generally coaches of teams that are still in the hunt for the Championship don’t release their players. So, in theory, players like Clint Dempsey, DeAndre Yedlin, Michael Bradley, Graham Zusi, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez, and others might miss the match-up and force Jurgen Klinsmann to call on more European players such as Julian Green, Jozy Altidore, Jermaine Jones, and others.

The match will be the final game of a memorable 2014 campaign for the USMNT, “We are absolutely thrilled to finish our work in 2014 with a game against Ireland,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “They are consistently a difficult team to play against, and we welcome these types of challenges as we continue to move our team forward towards the Gold Cup next year.”

The USMNT already have a set date with the Czech Republic on September 3, two friendlies that have still not been announced in October, and the final clash of 2014 with Ireland on November 18.
