Toronto FC forward Jermain Defoe was elected Major Soccer League Player of the Week

Jermain DefoeToronto FC forward Jermain Defoe was elected Major Soccer League Player of the Week for the second week of the 2014 MLS season after scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory against Seattle Sounders FC.

In his MLS debut, Defoe attempted two shots on goal and found the back of the net both times helping Toronto open their season with a win for the first time in club history.

The English national opened his MLS account in the 17th minute after a through ball from midfielder Jonathan Osorio split Seattle’s defense and found Defoe in the top of the box. Defoe cooly picked up the ball and laid it past Sounders keeper Stefan Frei.

“I’ve been always so focused  on my debuts that I’ve been lucky enough to score in every debut. You can sort of now, like, not relax a bit but go into the next game confident. I’m sure, or I hope, that if the chance comes, I’ll be able to get another goal” said Defoe after the match.

Just seven minutes after scoring his first MLS goal, Defoe once again made magic when Sounders midfielder Marco Pappa played a ball back to Djimi Traore but was intercepted by Defoe who blasted a shot past Frei.

“I just wanted to win the (Seattle) game so badly,” said Defoe. “I remember saying before, it’s important to get off to a good start.”
