Jozy Altidore to Captain Senior Men’s National Team For First Time

USMNT vs. Panama

For the first time since playing for the Under-18 national team, Jozy Altidore will wear the captain’s armband as the United States takes on Panama tonight in Panama City.

With fill-in Tim Howard released back to Everton, and regular captain Clint Dempsey remaining with the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer,  Jurgen Klinsmann has turned to Altidore to don the captain’s armband for the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying hexagonal finale against Panama.

The 23-year-old Altidore has not captained a U.S. side since he played for the Under-18 national team.

Altidore has scored in six consecutive starts for the USA after going more than a year and a half without an international goal. His goal Friday night finished off the USA’s 2-0 victory over Jamaica that sealed the Americans’ place atop the Hex.

Without any fanfare, US Soccer post on Instagram the announcement earlier today:

The game can be seen tonight on beIN SPORT starting at 9:30 pm.
